The use of resources and energy provided by the environment allows economic systems to be sustained and grow while the production and consumption of goods and services transform materials and energy, thereby leading to qualitative changes in the environment. The disciplines of economics, ecology and thermodynamics provide seemingly distinct perspectives on the way economic systems function in interaction with their environment. Yet, this study shows that there is significant overlap in the core concepts underlying these three disciplines. Additionally, methods confined typically to the individual disciplines can be combined to give valuable insight into economy-environment interactions. The study provides a first formal approach to economic actions and environmental repercussions motivated by the overlap of the core concepts of economics, ecology and thermodynamics.
