The resulting gatekeeping model revealed four key elements of primary interest to the study: (a) access into the channel, (b) gatekeepers, (c) analysis and discussion of applicant materials to produce semi-finalists, and (d) interviews and discussion of merit of interviews to produce finalists. An analysis and discussion of these four elements revealed many factors that positively or negatively influenced a diverse candidate's ability to access and navigate the presidential selection process.
