A content analysis was performed on a stratified random sample of 555 newspaper articles identified in the New York Times from 1993 to 1997. The data revealed 168 themes and issues across the following 18 categories: Religion; Home And Family; Community; Education; Schools; Students; School Personnel; People; Culture and Society; Safety; Government; School Governing Bodies; Finance; Economics; Business; Disparity; Diversity and Research. Originally, it was believed that this sample of New York Times articles would contain references to specific purposes for American education and that these purposes would reflect a philosophical bias that would influence public opinion regarding education. However, no identifiable philosophical purpose was found in this sample of New York Times articles. Additionally, it was expected that an individual reading these newspaper articles would be able to construct a cultural model of American education. However, it was determined that what was present in these New York Times articles may more appropriately be labeled an information model of American education rather than a cultural model.
