<dc:description>This thesis also develops a new imaging model, which is more accurate than the conventional models (pinhole, thin-lens and Gaussian thick-lens). Our investigation of the standard models shows that the models make two implicit assumptions: first, that the aperture is coincident with the first principal plane, and second, that a point light source uniformly illuminates the aperture. Both of these conflict with the design of many available lenses. We show that this modeling error has serious consequences. We propose a new imaging model that takes into account the actual position of the aperture. We also study the impact of the second assumption about the uniform distribution of light across the aperture on photometric mapping. It shows the impact is quite significant and adds to those of more familiar cosine-fourth and vignetting effects.</dc:description>
