<dc:description>In the past decades, the use of massively parallel supercomputers and distributed systems has increased, while the cost of computational resources has decreased steadily. This has lead to the emergence of a new dominant cost---that of the human developer. The solution of large-scale scientific problems has generated a need for development environments that ensure good human efficiency in the development of an application, in addition to the application's computational efficiency. We have developed an environment for rapid-prototyping of scientific codes, combining the ease-of-use of a MATLAB-like interactive interface with the high performance of a massively parallel system. This new approach to high-performance computing bridges the gap between high-level interactive interfaces and parallel architectures. It further allows the utilization of highly optimized parallel numerical libraries. Finally, the difficult and error-prone management of distributed resources is handled in a manner transparent to the user.</dc:description>
