Matzen, Laura Eileen 2015-09-25T20:39:25Z 2015-09-25T20:39:25Z 10000-01-01 2008 2008 Experiments 1 and 2 show that study strategy, which is guided by the context of the studied words, has a substantial impact on the relative amounts of surface and semantic information that are encoded in memory, resulting in different patterns of memory errors at test. Experiment 3 shows that older adults are able to use these naturalistic strategies in the same way as younger adults, resulting in the same pattern of memory errors. Experiment 4 plots the forgetting functions for surface and semantic information and investigates the relationship between forgetting and false alarm rates to semantic and phonological lures. Finally, Experiment 5 investigates how effectively readers can use surface and semantic information to cue memory for previously studied items. This experiment uses event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the brain activity in response to reminding cues for items that were later remembered compared to those that were later forgotten.
