In sum, Disengagement, as initially construed, seems to be characteristic of persons with ""high"" levels of control over this process, whereas dissociation predominates among those with ""low"" control. It is speculated that Disengagement arises as part of normal developmental processes, and that disruptions of this process may result in dissociation. An important disrupter appears to be family dysfunction, whereas trauma, although important, has different effects depending on the context in which it occurs."
