          <dc:description>All three of the cadherins investigated in this thesis formed strong heterophilic bonds at three ectodomain alignments. Of the three, the inner bond (strongest) corresponding to full ectodomain overlap, did not exhibit much variation in either the homophilic or the heterophilic interactions. The two outer bonds (weaker) which are attributed to EC2/EC2 and EC1/EC1 binding, exhibit the greatest variation in bond strengths. In contrast to current thinking, these data show that there is no energetic preference for homophilic over heterophilic binding that would explain the cell sorting behavior.</dc:description>
