          <dc:description>The results of this research show that process-based interdisciplinary models can be developed for understanding large-scale ecological dynamics in river networks. The explicit inclusion of species' biological functions allows the model to explain the arrangement and response of stream communities. Perhaps the most novel aspect of this model is its direct incorporation of a connectivity component. Despite the recognition of the importance of connectivity in watershed science, it has not been directly incorporated into models of large-scale riverine systems. This approach is practical and functional, especially when considering the unique characteristics of river networks---their spatial structure, internal associations, and interactions with the landscape. The result is a tool for watershed assessment that can easily integrate ecological integrity into decisions that affect a watershed's hydrologic characteristics.</dc:description>
