Specifically, top management teams hiring managers from large firms, from large plants, and from slow-growth plants are likely to expand at above-average rates. Further, some evidence is found that a firm's capacity expansion path is related to the resource-based variables---particularly human resources, skills & capabilities, and product line expansion---that occupy managers' minds. The results provide a foundation on which to build the next step in linking capacity expansion paths with managerial knowledge - longitudinal investigation into the sources of managerial perceptions of key strategic variables that are found to affect capacity expansion paths.
