Viewing central and eastern European history as a process of negotiating the contradictory desires in approaching modernity provides a new, more complex explanation for the polarization of the region's societies, their political instability and their infamous manifestations of authoritarianism, illiberality, ethnic conflict and anti-Semitism. No longer viewed as aberrations arising from an inadequate understanding of modernity, such manifestations can be seen, to the contrary, as the direct outcome of ever-more intensive, deliberate and conscious efforts to establish a relationship with the spirit of the moment."
