As president, he clung to republicanism as an anchor in a turbulent period, but that rigidity led to his break with the Whigs over their insistence on establishing a new national bank. Shunned by both major parties, Tyler turned to the foreign policy realm and worked to secure the long postponed annexation of Texas. Achieved in the waning days of his administration, annexation reaffirmed the republican and Jeffersonian vision of preserving the agrarian idyll by expanding into space.
