Quantitative analysis is brought to bear on: patterns of frontier land holding with the examination of nominal tax registries; the rate of growth of the frontier economy as a whole as well as on an industry- and firm-level basis; social structure and wealth holding through the analysis of probate records; and politics through the analysis of office holding, incumbency rates, and collective biographical data. The quantitative evidence developed in the dissertation has been cross-tabulated in order to yield new insights into the interrelation of social, economic, and political variables in historical development. The theoretical approach employed in this dissertation draws upon the empirical methods developed by the New Economic History while retaining the genuine insights of Marxist and dependentista analysis with the aim to provide a clearer picture of the internal and external factors in frontier development.
