By combining an analysis of musical performance, gendered practices, and song text to understand social and cultural practices and meanings, this study draws upon a combination of the disciplines of ethnomusicology, feminist anthropology, and performance studies. As such, I address the contemporary critical issue concerning the nature and role of anthropology in a world that has become smaller and less distinct as not only social and political boundaries but also disciplinary borderlands continue to shift and indeed to diminish in importance.
