If international trade is a mechanism that allows a country to access the stock of ideas in the world economy, we claim that trade with developed countries that possess ideas enhances growth, while trade with less developed countries does not. We test this hypothesis with data from Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. We find that trade with developed countries causes growth in most of the cases, while trade with less developed countries does not, except in the case of Singapore.
