The inertial component of migration, associated with the ""friends and relatives effect"" is connected to the hypothesis of unit root. Given the series idiosyncrasies, the performances of the Hasan-Koenker robust unit root test and least square based tests are compared. The tests exhibit some contradictory results. The residuals of the augmented Dickey-Fuller models are heavy tailed distributed. It was expected that the Hasan-Koenker test would reject more often when the unit root hypothesis seems implausible (as indicated by the autocorrelation functions), but this does not occur on a regular basis."
