In an attempt to place the transcribed anthems into an historical context, there are separate chapters on Locke's sacred music and the fourteen anthems for men's voices. These are designed to help the reader see the evolution of Locke's style (these are his earliest known works). The anthems form a bridge between the pre-Commonwealth and Restoration repertories.
