One chapter of this study explores the origins and effects of the post-war reform movement of which the Societe was one manifestation, and extensive space is given over to an examination of French concert life during the Second Empire and in the twenty years after the Franco-Prussian War, with particular emphasis placed on the amount and types of new French music being performed by various Parisian concert organizations.
