Bauer, Charlotte D. 2015-09-28T15:53:02Z 2015-09-28T15:53:02Z 10000-01-01 2007 2007 Visual images representing the medieval University of Paris and its sub-groups (i.e., colleges, faculties, and 'nations') survive in a range of media, including painted miniatures, seals, and sculpture. The majority of these works have not been previously studied from an art historical perspective and are commonly interpreted as mere scenes of everyday university life when, in fact, they are highly constructed images that reflect varying notions of group identity for the institution. This dissertation treats the surviving material as a single corpus in order to examine broadly the modes of visual display and particularized iconography used to represent the University and its members, and more specifically how visual iconography helped shape the University's flexible corporate identity.
