Abstract
This report provides a brief history of an early freenet, Prairienet, which was launched at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) in 1993. With two years of funding that began in 1997, the Community Networking Initiative built on Prairienet’s foundation. GSLIS created the Community Informatics Initiative in 2007, followed by the Center for Digital Inclusion in 2012. Most of the efforts described herein were grant-funded and project based, including the Urbana Champaign Big Broadband (UC2B) agency.
