Abstract
The use of continuous, physiological measures such as pupil size is becoming increasingly important in user interface design, attention management, and affective computing. While this data is best explored in context of ongoing task execution, existing information visualizations do not support such exploration. In this design study, we present an interactive tool called TAPRAV, which provides an interactive focus+context visualization of physiological data aligned to a hierarchical model of task execution. This visualization, along with built-in data analysis tools, allows users to rapidly explore relationships among the data that would otherwise be extremely difficult to recognize. We present lessons from the iterative design process that led to our particular implementation and show how features of our tool help bridge rationale and worldview gaps. Our work contributes a tool that can be used to aid ongoing efforts in specific research areas and lessons learned from following an iterative design process can inform the development of similar tools.
