Abstract
This thesis focuses on the development of Chinese piano music from 1936 to 1976.The first part explores various cultural, social, and political influences that shaped this development over forty years. As a historical process, the development of Chinese piano music reflects modern China’s social, political, and cultural development. It features not only creative uses of Western musical elements, but also inspiration of Chinese philosophies, history, cultures, customs, moral values, aesthetics, literature, and arts. The fusion between Western piano art and Chinese national music creates a unique musical language that can be understood by both Western and Eastern audiences. Selected Chinese piano works are examined through a discussion on theoretical aspects, historical contexts, and artistic conceptions of these works, in order to demonstrate how the works exemplify the various inspirations and influences that have shaped the development of piano music composed in China. Over the past century, piano music in China has grown and developed significantly, from almost nothing, to a significant cultural phenomenon that will have profound social and cultural meaning for future generations. In recent decades, the music has drawn more and more scholarly attention, in addition to growing in reputation and popularity. This research project strives to expand the scope of recent descriptive studies on Chinese piano music. It is hoped that this study will contribute to preserving, studying, and promoting Chinese piano music internationally, in addition to encouraging further compositional output.
