Abstract
Recently, apprenticeships have re-emerged as a new approach to train young people for middle- and high-skilled jobs in the U.S. Often referred to as the “gold standard” of workforce education, apprenticeships have proven to be effective for helping young people make a smooth transition to full-time employment (Klor De Alva & Schneider, 2018). The purpose of this study is to examine the Swiss apprenticeship system and explore strategies for growing apprenticeships in the U.S through stackable credentials. In Switzerland, apprenticeships are an integral part of the overall education system. Two-thirds of Swiss students at the upper secondary level choose to start their careers as apprentices with the vocational education and training (VET) system and 40% of Swiss companies offer apprenticeships in over 230 occupations (Embassy of Switzerland in the United States of America, 2016). The first section of the study discusses what the Swiss apprenticeship model is -- the key features and challenges -- and how the country successfully modernized it. The second section looks into the history of apprenticeship in the U.S. and explores the possibility of promoting apprenticeships through stackable credentials.
