The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) consists of a staff of approximately 5,200 employees, occupies nearly 4.5 million square feet of space and is responsible for over 140,000 miles of roads. As a large and influential governmental entity, IDOT is obligated to sustainability and is a committed leader in conservation, efficiency, and environmental citizenship in Illinois. The scope of IDOT’s commitment to sustainability and green initiatives was highlighted in this presentation. The presentation also addressed how IDOT strives to meet the needs of both today’s and tomorrow’s generations via a sustainable manner through research, planning and implementation of sustainable practices. This presentation explored IDOT’s sustainable initiatives in the areas of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, recycling, facility improvements, office practices, education and outreach, along with a commitment to be involved cross-departmentally with other state agencies in order to maximize and achieve sustainable goals.
