Abstract
The prohibitive cost of textbooks results in many undergraduates attempting to take courses at a disadvantage as they forego this purchase and “make do” with what they find online. Open access textbooks and course materials have the potential to provide a solution to this educational barrier. This white paper reviews how community colleges are attempting to benefit their students with open access materials, and the role these sources and institutional repositories could play in future student success. The paper summarizes the arguments on the advantages and pitfalls of adopting open access course materials, reflects on how these findings apply to community colleges, and points to future research needed to better understand how open access can support teaching at these two-year institutions and—more broadly—across the academy.
