Abstract
The deformation of metals at low temperatures is experimentally described by an equation of the form y˙ = ∨ exp - (H/kT). This equation is derived from the theory of rate processes. Considerable experimental data, especially for BCC metals,indicates that the frequency factor is a constant. This paper is intended to explore reasons why the frequency factor seems to be constant over the range of strain rates and temperatures investigated experimentally. To do this, the frequency factor ∨ is determined by an approximate calculation from the dislocation frequency, the strain during activation and the entropy of activation. Using some experimental data on iron, the frequency factor is calculated and this value is found to agree well with the measured value.
