Abstract
The starting point for large-eddy simulation is an equation governing the evolution of the spatially filtered velocity field. In current practice, this equation is derived by low-pass filtering the Navier-Stokes equations and interchanging filtering and differentiation operations to get a partial differential equation for the filtered velocity. This procedure leaves the filtering operation unspecified. and it is not valid unless the filter is shift-invariant, with the consequence that it is not well suited to the description of inhomogeneous turbulence. Using the concept of mean-square optimal algorithms, a new governing equation is derived for the evolution in physical space of large eddies defined by an explicit and inhomogeneous filtering operation.
