- Abstract
- The infrared spectrum of CO$_2$-Kr in the region of the carbon dioxide \nub{3} fundamental vibration (near 2350 \wn) was first studied by Randall \textit{et al.}\footnote{R.W. Randall. M.A. Walsh, and B.J. Howard, \textit{Faraday Discuss. Chem. Soc.} \textbf{85}, 13 (1988).} Here we reexamine this spectrum, using a tunable OPO laser source to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion of a dilute mixture of CO$_2$ and Kr in helium. The bending combination band, which is observed near 2378 \wn, yields an intermolecular bending frequency of 29.43 \wn, in fairly good agreement with a theoretical prediction of 30.02 \wn~by Chen \textit{et al.}\footnote{R. Chen, H. Zhu, and D. Xie, \textit{Chem. Phys. Lett.} \textbf{511}, 229 (2011).} The spectrum of CO$_2$-Kr in the region of the CO$_2$ (01$^{1}$1) - (01$^{1}$0) hot band is also observed, following on our recent study of this transition in CO$_2$-Ar.\footnote{T.A. Gartner, A.J. Barclay, A.R.W. McKellar, and N. Moazzen-Ahmadi, \textit{Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{22}, 21488 (2020).} This gives a measurement of the symmetry breaking of the CO$_2$ \nub{2} bending mode caused by the Kr atom. The out-of-plane mode turns out to be about 1.42 \wn~higher than the in-plane mode for CO$_2$-Kr, as compared to splittings of 0.06 \wn~for CO$_2$-Ne, 0.88 \wn~for CO$_2$-Ar, and 2.14 \wn~for CO$_2$-Xe.
