Abstract

This study examines Karol Szymanowski’s 20 Mazurkas, Op. 50, a collection often neglected by pianists in performance and scholarship alike. It provides pedagogical insights on technical and interpretative issues that pianists encounter when playing this collection.This study is comprised of three major sections. The first chapter introduces a brief overview of Szymanowski’s life and musical background along with the influences on his music divided into three periods: early (1900-1913), middle (1914-1921), and final years (1922-1937). This chapter also offers the composer’s musical style found in his solo piano works. The second chapter provides a general idea of the mazurka and identifies the various types: Oberek, Mazur, and Kujawiak along with as tudy of selected mazurkas of Chopin in order to gain a better understanding of the genre. The last chapter investigates 20 Mazurkas, Op. 50by Szymanowski in more detail providing a stylistic overview of each composition. Performance issues and technical difficulties are discussed with pedagogical suggestions. This doctoral thesis is accompanied by a doctoral project recital in which selected works from 20 Mazurkas, Op. 50by Szymanowski as well as selected mazurkas by Chopin are performed.
