- Abstract
- The current social context of racialized violence and COVID-19 has brought inequalities in our society to the forefront. How can we foster a more just and equitable society for our youth? Transformative social-emotional learning is the process of seeking solutions to today’s problems that empower youth identity, agency, and belonging. My research uses Photovoice, a community-participatory action research method, to engage youth and elevate their voices. This image submitted is a composition of just a few photos and captions created by middle school students. The captions are displayed exactly as they have been written to preserve the authenticity of student voices. I took this picture at the school where I am serving as a social work intern. Every day, I ponder on making the world a better place for our youth. Currently, I am working to showcase my students’ photos and voices to teachers and parents during the upcoming parent-teacher conferences. I appreciate how this project allows me to integrate research into my practice. Photovoice provides a safe space where students are seen, heard, and validated. Most importantly, it takes the ordinary everyday life experiences of our youth and gives voice to their hopes and dreams for a better world.
