- Abstract
- In 2016, the internet traffic was measured to be 280 Tb/s which is equivalent to everybody talking at the same time. It is expected that this number will grow at a rate of 100x per decade since today’s society enjoys downloading almost everything over the internet which results in an increased demand for bandwidth. Additionally, neural network training & machine learning optimization now takes place through cloud computing which is also another factor that takes up the bandwidth. Such a large bandwidth is fundamentally limited by the material properties of silicon which is the state-of-the-art material for currently integrated photonics. These requirements lead to the main goal for other optical materials such as LiNbO3 to manipulate and control the light in demand at a larger bandwidth. This photo is my LiNbO3 acousto-optic isolator which helps photons to be controlled almost every wavelength by its wide-spanning transmission window. After 10> runs, it demonstrated record-breaking optical isolation at two different wavelengths, and it is expected to be used in quantum computers and integrated photonics.
