- Abstract
- This project analyzes the form, style, and plausible influences of the Suite for Two Cellos by composer Samuel Zyman (b.1956). In doing so, I describe different styles and genres present in the work and its musical characteristics. Additionally, I will use my interviews with Zyman and his collaborators to further discuss his creation process and historical connections. In this regard, the Suite for Two Cellos is an ideal example to study Zyman’s style and discuss connections between his eclectic writing and multicultural experiences as a Jewish-Mexican composer. Zyman trained in both Mexico and the United States. The Suite for Two Cellos is a well-crafted combination of traditional and modern elements that extend from baroque dances and counterpoint to syncopated octatonic melodies mixed with Latin-American rhythms. The ultimate goal of this project is to expand the scarce literature about Mexican composers and help with the popularization of the Latin-American repertoire for cello.
