Abstract
This dissertation is a two-part treatment of Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Oratorium [Der Durchzug durchs Rote Meer]. The first part is a conducting handbook that examines the libretto, musical structures, influences, and historical performance practice of this work. Part one also includes historical context for this piece specifically and the oratorio as a genre. These materials have been collected to aid conductors in their preparation of this piece. Part two of this dissertation is a critical report and edition of the work, transcribed from Hummel’s autograph manuscript. In addition to providing an urtext edition, the examination of the manuscript has also been used as a tool to understand performance practice. This work is Hummel’s only oratorio and comes from his time as concertmaster for the Esterházy Kapelle in Eisenstadt where he served as assistant to Joseph Haydn. While Hummel’s Masses have been the subject of previous research, very little has been said about this piece, which was only rediscovered in the twenty-first century. This document is another step towards understanding the choral output of a Hummel, who before now has been primarily known as a piano virtuoso and pedagogue.
