- Abstract
The article explores the process of learning French and other living languages in private and public education in Russia in the 18th century. The main objectives of this study are to understand which sections of the Russian society had the opportunity to learn French and other foreign languages, for what purposes they did so, who taught them, and what level in language acquisition they were able to achieve in the learning process. Among the large educational institutions on the example of which this issue is being studied are the Land Gentry Cadet Corps, the Naval Cadet Corps, Moscow University, and Smolny Institute. In several cases (Land Gentry Cadet Corps, Naval Cadet Corps), new archival materials are employed to understand what part of the students of these institutions studied French in comparison with German (the main competitor of French in Russia throughout the 18th century), how this ratio changed over time, how the methods used in these educational institutions influenced the study of foreign languages by cadets. A study of private education reveals significant differences between the private and public sectors, even though in both cases instructors were, as a rule, of foreign origin. An analysis of the social composition of those who studied languages in the private sector and in noble schools gives reason to conclude that although they all belonged to the nobility, these groups differed significantly in their social status. In general, the published study replaces stereotypical and very inaccurate ideas about noble Franco-Russian bilingualism with a much more accurate model. This model takes into account both the multilingual nature of education and the complex social stratification of language skills in Russian society, thus more accurately assessing degree of linguistic modernization of the Russian elite in the 18th century.
