Abstract
Research paradigms provide the underlying logic for investigation design, though the articulation of this logic is often limited in published research reports, and a difficult practice for novice researchers to establish. The proliferation of paradigms within and across disciplines means that researchers must be prepared to understand how different paradigms are used to establish multiple, and sometimes competing claims to truth. This paper presents a reflexive thematic analysis of interviews with qualitative researchers about their experiences and education in qualitative data analysis. In recounting specific projects and methods training, participants described how they came to understand research paradigms and developed their own approach to using research paradigms in their work.
