Abstract
LIS research draws from a wide range of research approaches, each of which has its own assumptions about how new knowledge should be developed, or epistemology. These assumptions, however, are not always articulated, even though they are the basis on which we design our own research and evaluate the work of others. Without an awareness of our own epistemological standpoint, we may unfairly assess the work of researchers who draw on alternative research approaches and ultimately limit the diversity of LIS scholarship.
In this workshop, we’ll discuss epistemological assumptions and work towards a statement of your own point of view. To facilitate this conversation, we will (1) explore examples of LIS research to identify unstated epistemological assumptions and (2) work through examples of how a single research topic could be explored from a variety of research approaches, with a focus on data collection, data analysis, and reporting research results.
