Abstract
To reduce overall emissions from the electrical power generation sector, the U.S. must increase renewables penetration to the electrical grid. However, this integration
creates challenges for grid operators who must ensure reliability and power quality for the entire system with intermittent renewables and other traditional energy sources while meeting the demand from consumers. The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), a unit of the Prairie Research Institute
(PRI) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), aims to collaborate with Waste Pressure Corp., Ecotek Engineering USA LLC, and other industry partners to
develop the Center for Energy Storage at Existing Assets (CESEA) on the university’s campus. CESEA will focus on long duration energy storage systems that can serve the energy transition by integrating existing infrastructure, which will reduce the initial capital expenditure and demonstrate that it is possible to repurpose fossil assets that would otherwise become stranded.
