Abstract
In antenna design, one of the most common tradeoffs is size and bandwidth. Electrically small antennas, such as field probes, can have a wide bandwidth but often depend on amplification, as they are not efficient and have poor matches, while resonant antennas have good matches but do not typically have wide bandwidths. Resonant shielded loops could offer a solution compromise, as the location of the gap in the shield relative to the short to ground dictates the resonant frequency. This offers degrees of freedom when it comes to resonant antennas, as most cannot become broadband without being in an array. With the variable gap comes the asymmetry of the shielded loop, which results in current leakage to the feed line and is the primary drawback to this version of the antenna. Adding more gaps in a log-periodic-like pattern can increase the fractional bandwidth of the antenna, but the gap width is crucial to the performance of a multi-gap loop and will require further research to optimize. By studying the frequency behavior of the resonant shielded loop, there is the potential for a resonant wide band antenna that does not need the size of the structure to change for resonance in a wide range of frequencies
