Abstract

In recent years healthcare has been increasingly promoted through social media. Social media is considered one of the main tools used by patients with mental health conditions. Online mental health communities (OMHCs) have emerged as one of the most powerful tools available for individuals concerned about the social stigma associated with mental health conditions. OMHCs are centered around individuals who have health conditions such as anxiety and depression. OMHCs provide the opportunity for patients to ask questions, express their issues, and seek support from health professionals and other patients. Depression is one of the major causes of disability and it has been estimated that it will be one of the leading causes of disease burden by 2030. Depression treatment encompasses a wide collection of methods to mitigate illness, including physical therapy, medication, and self-care. Self-care includes the behaviors that a patient adopts to maintain their illness’s stability, as well as observe, control, monitor, and respond to symptoms. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of OMHCs on self-care behaviors among patients with depression in Saudi Arabia. The study will use mixed qualitative methodology. To comprehensively explore this topic, the research will utilize and integrate theoretical models.
