Abstract
Bridge strikes are events where a bridge superstructure is struck from beneath by an over-height vehicle, causing damage to the bridge. When a bridge strike event occurs, bridge owners must assess the damage and decide what, if any, action is required to maintain bridge functionality and safety. There is a growing body of literature exploring terrestrial laser scanning applications for bridge construction, operation, and maintenance. However, only one instance has been found where laser scanning was applied to investigate impact damage for steel I-girder bridges. A new procedure is presented for processing laser scan point cloud data of I-shaped steel bridge girders damaged by impact. The procedure extracts the bottom flange displacements over the length of the damaged girder span by combining existing point cloud processing techniques, including statistical outlier removal, voxelization, cross-sectional slicing, and RANSAC regression. Laser scan data from a damaged steel-girder highway bridge in Mt. Vernon, IL is used as a case study. The measurement procedure is designed to be implemented in real-world practice.
