Abstract
The University of Illinois is developing a distributed control architecture for microgrids. Basically, this control is more reliable than the regular centralized control, which is subject to a single point of failure. This thesis will focus on the development of a testbed that will be available to test microgrid’s features. In future projects, this distributed control architecture software will be tested with this testbed. One of the main problems of microgrids these days is the cost of testing and development since almost every microgrid has a different topology and DER distribution. With the creation of this Testbed, we can test microgrids without the risk of damaging expensive material, since until now the only way to test a microgrid in real-time and obtaining high-fidelity is by testing the microgrid with the real electrical infrastructure. This testbed pretends to be usable for most microgrid configurations. In this thesis high-order models of a grid-feeding inverter and of a grid-forming inverter were implemented intro Typhoon HIL.
