- Abstract
- With the rapid aging of South Korea's population and older adults’ predominant passive leisure participation, Colatec, a daytime disco for older adults, is a growing but controversial leisure activity, viewed by some as vulgar and by others as beneficial for physical activity. The dissertation aims to explore the stigmas and health benefits associated with Colatec participation among older Koreans, seeking to understand how the stigma affects their Colatec participation and their overall health and well-being. Through interviews and observation, I sought to understand the meaning of dancing at Colatec for Korean older adults and the impact of stigma and stereotypes on their leisure activities and Colatec experiences. The findings highlight the significance of Colatec social dancing in relation to its unique cultural aspect in healthy aging among Korean older adults, adding new dimensions to existing research. Colatec social dancing improves perceived physical health by alleviating bodily aches and enhancing posture. Emotionally, dancing helps participants transcend age stereotypes, maintain positive attitudes toward aging, and experience joy and a sense of youthfulness. The vibrant atmosphere of Colatec, where older adults socialize and form relationships, provides a supportive community that challenges societal norms about older adults. The affordability and accessibility of Colatec venues facilitate participation, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. Despite societal stigmas posing challenges, participants manage stigmatized views by finding satisfaction in their dance practice and valuing the various benefits of dancing. Colatec social dancers manage negative perceptions associated with aging and leisure activities and lead vibrant and fulfilling lives.
