Abstract
The major goal of this study is to develop a set of pedagogical priorities for the teaching of infinitival verb complementation to non-native speakers of English. This goal is pursued through a comprehensive Literature Review in the first chapter, a study of native-speaker usage of infinitival verb complementation in academic English in the second chapter, and the synthesis of the conclusions of the first two chapters in the third. Secondary goals include the development of a corpus-based approach to determining pedagogical priorities in teaching a given set of structures and the development of a methodology using the computer to process a corpus of naturally occurring word processed documents. The secondary goals are dealt with in Chapter Two.
