The name of Hubert Newcombe Alyea is virtually synonymous with the term chem. demonstration and is known to every chem. educator of this generation. He has delighted countless audiences with his lectures and has enriched the chem. demonstration literature with his series of TOPS demonstrations and the Alyea projector. The following paper is based on a lecture entitled "Chem. Demonstrations BA (Before Alyea)", given at a symposium in Dr. Alyea's honor sponsored by the Division of Chem. Education at the 197th National ACS Meeting in Dallas, Texas, on 11 Apr. 1989.
