Martha Annie Whiteley, coeditor and then editor-in-chief of the 11-vol. 4th edition of Thorpe's Dictionary of Applied Chem. is one of the few women chemists whose careers began before 1900 and who made important contributions to major tech. works still to be found in ref. sections of science libraries.
