Abstract
Paul Ehrlich is considered as the father of chemotherapy, which involves the use of drugs to destroy invading organisms while being harmless to the host. This started with his discovery, together with Alfred Bertheim, the true chem. nature of atoxyl. Atoxyl is an org. arsenic compd. which has proven to be effective against trypanosomes. With the discovery of the correct chem. structure of atoxyl, Ehrlich and Bertheim were able to modify its structure to enhance its medicinal qualities.
