Abstract
Small quantities of sugar played an essential role in the early development of chem. kinetics and of concepts such as the relative strengths of acids and bases. Wilhelm Ostwald played a major role in these developments. Ostwald studied the relative affinities of monobasic acids and applied chem. kinetics pioneer Ludwig Wilhemy's studies on the parameters that govern the rate of inversion of sugar to det. the inversion velocity consts. of more than 30 mainly monobasic acids. Other chemists who employed small quantities of sugar in their research are James Walker who studied the behavior of weak org. bases and Joseph Ellis Trevor who studied the hydrogen dissocn. of acid sodium salts.
