American chemist Gustavus Hinrichs proposed on Feb. 12, 1894 that the last days of Antoine Lavoisier be commemorated through the erection of a monument. He appealed to chemists all over the world to make donations for the cause. The statue was cast in bronze by E. Barris of the French Art Institute and dedication ceremonies were held on July 27, 1900. However, the statue was removed by German occupation forces during World War II.
