- Abstract
- The important contributions of Otto Knut Folin and Donald Dexter Van Slyke to 20th century clin. chem. are discussed. Their systematic explorations on blood and urine set the style and shaped the parameters for clin. chem. for the remainder of the century as they developed practical and clin. applicable methods of anal. By analyzing small vols. of biol. fluids, they detd. normal ranges, correlating variations with pathol. conditions, and elucidated metabolic pathways in health and disease. Neither Folin nor Van Slyke had medical degrees but their research and teaching of biochem. and clin. chem. demonstrated that chemists could make great contributions to advances in medical diagnosis and the treatment of disease.
