Ami Argand (1750-1803) during his short lifetime contributed many inventions that would have a profound impact on future generations. This paper will deal with his lamp which he first designed in 1780 and improved upon over the next four years. The lamp was the result of putting into practice a theory of combustion that Argand had developed. This theory will be discussed in detail as well as the construction of the lamp. Argand's connection with the Montgolfier brothers and the invention of aviation will also be discussed.
